about

This was the first song I wrote years ago on a late summer day in Iowa City before the start of my senior year at U of I. First song that made me realize if I let go of my anxiety for a couple hours, I could write music and find joy in the process. First song I took to a friend to talk about. I took a six pack and my guitar to my friend’s porch. I showed him the song and asked his honest opinion on the words. First song I recorded thanks to a friend recommending a studio she heard about just outside of town. First song I sang to other people at an open mic at The Mill where I was encouraged to set up my first show.

I re-recorded it a couple years ago and have grown tired of not sharing this version. Re-recording this song has shown me my growth as an artist and helped me appreciate the beginning of this path I’m on. As a DIY artist without endless financial means, throwing a song into the internet feels like throwing it into a ditch on I-80. If you find this in the tall grass and empty beer cans, I hope you like it and hope it brings you some good feelings.

Songbird is about wanting to express your feelings to someone but not knowing how to communicate. Not knowing what to say and when to say it. I’m still figuring that out but I guess I’ve still got time to.

lyrics

I wish I could swoop you into my wings but I’m just a songbird outside your window
I wish I could come inside and sit on your table, just spend the morning talking and laughing
I’m singing at the top of my lungs trying to get through, but you never understand so I sit here and sit songs for you
Oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh

I wish you would climb up this old maple tree, I wouldn’t fly away like the other birds would do
I wish you’d sit here among the branches and leaves, just spend the morning talking and laughing
I’m singing at the top of my lungs trying to get through, but you never understand so I sit here and sit songs for you
Oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh

I wish I could swoop you into my wings but I’m just a songbird outside your window
I wish I could speak in whatever language you do, just spend the morning talking and laughing
I’m singing at the top of my lungs trying to get through, but you never understand so I sit here and sit songs for you
Oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh

I’ll sing all the oohs and ahhh that you’d like me to. Cuz the oohs and ahhh are the only way that I can say I love you
Oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh
